The Story

Product Overview:

The Dawn Redwood Tree (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is one of our favorite shade trees. Originating from Central China and discovered in 1941, all Dawn Redwood specimens relate to this Chinese population. The beautiful and delicate fern-like needles appear light green in spring, turn gold in autumn, and drop before returning to glory in spring.

Don’t be afraid to grow it in a big pot—we have four-foot redwoods in pots, and they will grow happily like this. Just remember to keep them watered well in summer so that the root system doesn't dry out. If bonsai is your hobby, Dawn Redwoods make excellent bonsai tree plantings. This part of species preservation allows this rare plant to be enjoyed nationwide.

The Dawn Redwood makes a great specimen tree, can be planted in clumps, or used as a border or fence line tree. Its foliage is more lacy-looking than other redwoods, and in the fall, it will turn red-yellow like a maple, aspen, or birch tree. The Dawn Redwood is a deciduous conifer tree!
